A White Snake Projects production featuring music performed by the MIFA Victory Players with Tianhui Ng as Musical Director. Galvanized by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the virtual opera "Death by Life" was conceived as a monument of support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The opera explores the intersection of systemic racism and mass incarceration using texts written by incarcerated writers and their families, with a score by five Black composers representing a broad range of ages and styles.
"This show is the result of heartfelt discussions at White Snake Projects about the best way to respond to the death of George Floyd. Our most powerful expression is our ability as artists to give voice to stories that are too often absent or under-represented in our art. With Death By Life, the Victory Players will once again work with White Snake Projects to bring remarkable new music, representing a range of compositional voices from among our African American colleagues in authentic stories from our fellow citizens in incarceration today. We will once again be using cutting-edge technologies, including the beta version of "Tutti" which allows our singers to perform live in the virtual environment of the Unreal Game Engine.
